Tyson's lesson hits upon three skills valued in Tyson's history class: 1) reading and comprehending primary source materials, 2) understanding various points of view on the same topic, and 3) discussing their viewpoints in a debate format. Students will be studying the Indian Removal Act from four different perspectives: Andrew Jackson’s opinions on the Indian Removal Act, members of Congress for the Indian Removal Act, members of Congress opposed to the Indian Removal Act, and members of the Cherokee Nation. Students will then debate the act based on their assigned role.
