Split Decision: Slavery Compromises of the 1800s

8th grade, civil war, compromise, Compromise of 1850, eighth grade, jon bauer, kansas, Kansas-Nebraska Act, missouri compromise, slavery

Jon's lesson gives students the chance to assess how the Missouri Compromise, the Compromise of 1850, and the Kansas-Nebraska Act changed the United States.  Students will review all three acts by completing a Venn diagram and analyze primary source documents from Thomas Jefferson, John Calhoun and Abraham Lincoln as they reflect upon these acts.  After a discussion of the primary sources, students will treat the three acts as if they were three rounds of a boxing match, scoring the acts before finally determining a ‘winner’ between the interests of the northern states and southern states.

Jon includes a handouts with his lesson plan.
