A Walk Through the American West

This lesson concludes the students’ study of the effects of the railroad on the American West. The purpose of the lesson is for students to use primary documents to assess and evaluate the many ways railroads impacted westward expansion and settlement students have studied. The students will examine pictures of the primary source artifacts from the period.

The goal is to have students recognize the different primary sources and use them to draw conclusions about the historical importance of the railroads in western settlement.
