This lesson will encourage students to appreciate the sacrifices Veterans have made since the beginning of the US so students can retain their freedom and live in a democratic society. The ultimate goal is to use this lesson near Veterans Day so students can have a “real life” connection to the men and women who gave their lives so that US citizens may live free.

The lesson is based off of a lesson plan on the National Park Service web site. Students will examine photos, maps, readings, drawings and letters from Andersonville, a Union Civil War prison. Finally, students will compare Union and Confederate Prisoner of War camps.
