Origins of the American Constitution

Deb's lesson is designed to give students experience analyzing primary documents for a greater understanding of the origins of American constitutional principles, e.g. limited government, separation of powers, popular sovereignty, etc. This lesson was developed as an extension of the assignment History and Geography: Origins of the Constitution in the student textbook, Holt: United States History. Resources for this lesson include: the Magna Carta, ideas from the Enlightenment, the Mayflower Compact, the history of American colonial assemblies, the English Bill of Rights, and the Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom.
